The shut off valves underneath my bathroom sink will not turn off.I want to replace a lavoratory handle and went to shut off the water supply underneath the sink and the shutoff valves are seized up and will not turn. There is no sign of rust or corrosion.I have lived in my house for about 15 months and suspect that the previous owners did not turn these valves on and off for quite some time.I exerted some force to try to turn them off--but did not want to apply too much force and break them.I sprayed around the valve with some WD-40 and it has been two days and I periodically check to see if I can turn the valve and they will not turn.Is there any safe plumbers hint of how to loosen up these valves?

Replace them with compression valves. Any diy can handle this project. Just remember to use pipe dope.

Replace the valve using either a compression or a threaded valve depending on what you have for piping to the valve. When selecting a new valve be sure to get the 1/4 turn stop valves, they are much better at standing the test of time.

Pipe dope for what? I have installed thousands of them and have never used pipe dope, grease, or anything else on them. There is no "safe" method. Just use more force on the handle. If they do not turn you will have to replace them anyway, so it does not make any difference if they break.

I dope inside the compression ring.

I never do it. Open the bag or box, snug the compression nut to line up the compression ring, slide the valve on the tubing, then tighten it.

This looks like it can turn into one of those putty vs. silicone debates...

What do they say... Lefty loosy - righty tighty

In other words CCW to open, CW to close, (valve handles facing you or up).

Important: Hold back with another pair of pliers while attempting to turn the handle or stem.

Before you begin the task, make sure that you turn both water off at the main or water heater and allow for water pressure to subside, before starting on those stops. Determine if those present stops are threaded, soldered or compression. Also consider if they are straight or angle pattern. 1/4 turn with knobs are the way to go with replacements. I like Brasscraft or Legend replacements. Depending on your water, you may do better with plastic stems vs brass stems in your brass stops.
You may have hold the supply line to the stop with another wrench if its exposed, to remove it.

Your replacement stops should go on much easier. Make sure that you remove the aerator from the faucet, before you turn the water back on to flush out any debris that may be in the line.

Best Wishes

Yes, Propane. Should've been more specific.

I knew someone would say left/right couplings too. But black is gas, not plumbing. Galvi always has a better way so...

if you dont want to use channelocks go to big box and ask for disabled handles, theyre shaped to make turning things like stops easier, theyre big and clumsy looking but do the trick, look in a hospital supply store where they sell the easy up chairs and walkers etc they should also have them there
