1.

I want to write something really authentic about myself at this section.

Fortunately, I
lived since the beginning of my high school days, i.e. since my 11 years
(but later at the age of 18 as of my immigration to Germany
/ Europe in the context of family reunification),
in the German / European linguistic-cultural region, both by education and
destiny.

My profound German
and English skills besides my native Turkish skills I mainly owe to those overly
language-oriented/conscious 40 years of time lived between cultures, as
well as to my highly communicative and communication-devoted temper.

These skills of
course were never isolated from being active in translations. My familial fate
confronted me early on with it, long before my translation studies. For further
information about my overall
performance or samples of my earlier translations, please refer to my portfolio
with lots of samples of my practice, which for
experienced eyes are plenty. If you want to see more examples, I am
(discretion presupposed) always ready to send short translation passages
in certain / various fields from my former projects so that you can make a complete
picture of my work.

However, I am fundamentally
opposed to free translation tests, which I find unfair. Namely, if the
offered samples for assessment are not enough for someone, there is nothing
really one can do more. After all, no good client of mine has asked me for free
translation tests so far.

On the other hand,
you may translate a lot of text for testing purposes. However, if you are not
in any agreement about the rates, or no orders are placed, then all the effort
and time will be lost. I think nobody should be that accommodating.

Especially portals
such as ProZ.com are most useful in order to avoid such losses.

Likewise, I am against
quantity discounts, as translating is not a
countable quantitative and mathematical/physical activity but a non-countable
mental and qualitative one. Authenticity
and quality can never be replaced by quantity; every single word takes
its time and effort. That is why it can never
be performed by robots totally.

I feel deep
respect at the sight of any authentic skill, and value work. Hence,
linguistic/literary things, or being a translator, are not an occupation for me
that you have to exercise inevitably. Besides the fact that I by destiny found
myself there all along, they are something for me, in which I find fulfillment,
have my raison d'être, measure myself with others, have my "way of life" even when I am not busy with a
translation job.

Over the years it became
second nature and a self-evident habit and ease to me (and the ease part,
as is well-known, you get always by fun, never by force).

Since this is "my
thing" or "that" matter, which I have the best ability to,
so I am both challenging and demanding in it as well. Therefore, I
primarily feel myself unhappy and even sometimes sickly, if by any job at
times I feel there is something odd. Thus, it sometimes happens that I recall a
delivered translation to make a necessary correction in it even though the
client was completely pleased before.

Actually, I am not
really concerned about perfection. “Nobody is perfect”. The best thing
is even subject to a "flaw". I can not just be dishonest and unjust
to people, and bring them knowingly into trouble, who have trust in me. That’s
all.

I know by
experience that "slow and steady wins the race", and with
haste you just can meet again the opposite of what you originally wanted to
meet.

I find the saying
of the famous German writer Günter Grass very rightful, who once
said, "Translation is that which transforms
everything so that nothing changes", and think that you can not
fool quality-conscious people, as they recognize from very far away what is authentic and what counterfeit, and what is product of
occupation and what of vocation.

Real
authencity, in fact, can neither be learned nor pretended. Something is either authentic or
inauthentic (there is never anything in between). That is why authentic
quality can only be recognized and appreciated again by their own kind, i.e.
qualitative people, true experts; which is expressed quite well by the saying
"Pros work with Pros". Those people do not leave anything up to chance even if it may cost more
time and money.

There is almost nobody, who does not want quality and trust, and does not know that for the long haul you
do not get so far with quantity alone. Only few, however, realize
the impossibility that a creator of quality would and ever wanted to bring
about anything qualitative if nobody would trust her/him initially.

This is just
because quality, as said, can never be built on the ground of pressure,
coercion and haste or hurry. The opposite would be against the law of nature.

Thus remains
finally that trust before has to serve as a
necessary ground so quality may just arise on.

For this I
sometimes hear some say that this was too risky in today's fast times.
Since I can only reply: Only authenticity and
quality survive the time. "Nothing risked/ventured nothing
gained."

Ich möchte an diesem Platz wirklich
etwas über “mich” schreiben.

Zum Glück lebe ich seit Anfang meiner Gymnasialzeit, also ab
meinem 11. Lebensjahr, bildungsmäßig (später jedoch ab meinem Zuzug nach
Deutschland/Europa im Rahmen der Familienzusammenführung mit 18 Jahren), sowie
schicksalsmäßig im deutschen/europäischen Sprach- und Kulturraum.

Meine fundierten Deutsch- und Englischkentnisse, zuzüglich
zu meinen angestammten Türkischkenntnissen, verdanke ich hauptsächlich, neben
meinem stark kommunikationsorientierten und –freudigen Naturell, diesen allzu
sprachintensiv und sprachbewusst gelebten 40 Jahren zwischen den Kulturen.

Diese Kenntnisse waren natürlich nie von der Tätigkeit des
Übersetzens isoliert, weil mein Familienschicksal mich sehr früh, und lange vor
meinem späteren Übersetzerstudium, mit dieser Tätigkeit konfrontiert hatte.

Als weitergehende Information über meine allgemeine
Leistung, bzw. über Beispiele meiner bisherigen Übersetzungen, verweise ich auf
mein obiges Portfolio, wo ich reichlich Beispiele meiner Praxis
hochgeladen habe, die für geübte Augen
sogar allzuviel sind.. Falls man trotzdem noch Beispiele sehen möchte bin ich
(Diskretion vorausgesetzt) jederzeit bereit von meinen vorigen Projekten
kurze Passagen aus bestimmten/verschiedenen Bereichen zuzuschicken, damit man
sich über meine Arbeit ein vollständiges Bild machen kann.. Allerdings
bin ich grundsätzlich gegen kostenlose Testübersetzungen, die ich nicht
nur unfair, sondern auch müßig finde.. Denn, wenn jemandem die angebotenen
Beispiele für eine Beurteilung nicht ausreichen, mehr kann man da wirklich nichts
tun..

Schliesslich hat auch kein guter Kunde bisher von mir
kostenlose Testübersetzungen angefordert..

Auf der anderen Seite jedoch kann man sehr viel Text für
Testzwecke übersetzen, wenn aber am Ende keine Einigung im Preis erzielt wird,
oder keine Aufträge vorhanden sind, so ist dann alle Mühe und Zeit verloren.. So
reich kann niemand sein, finde ich.. Um solche Verluste zu vermeiden, sind
vor allem Portale wie ProZ.com sehr nützlich.

Genauso bin ich gegen Mengenrabatte, weil das Übersetzen keine quantitative/zählbare mathematisch-physische
Tätigkeit, sondern eine nichtzählbare geistig-qualitative Tätigkeit
ist. Echtheit und Qualität können niemals durch
Quantität ersetzt werden; jedes einzelne Wort braucht seine Zeit
und seinen Aufwand.

Deswegen kann es auch nie zu 100 % von Robotern ausgeführt
werden.

Sowie ich im Angesicht jedes echten Könnens und jeder echten
Wertarbeit tiefe Hochachtung spüre, so sind das Übersetzersein und das
Sprachlich-Literarische für mich kein Beruf, den man zwangsläufig ausüben muss,
sondern zusätzlich zu der Tatsache, dass ich mich schicksalsmäßig immer schon
darin befunden habe, etwas, worin ich Erfüllung finde, der Lebensinhalt für
mich besteht, ich mich mit Anderen messe, kurz “the
way of life” für mich liegt, auch wenn ich nicht gerade mit einem
Übersetzungsauftrag beschäftigt bin.

Mit Jahren wurde es mir zur zweiten Natur, zu einer
selbstverständlichen Gewohnheit und Leichtigkeit (und zur Leichtigkeit kommt
man bekanntlich nur durch Spass, aber nie durch Zwang).

Da dies “mein Ding”, also “die” Sache ist, die ich im
Leben am besten kann, bin ich darin auch herausfordernd und
anspruchsvoll.

Daher fühle ich mich als erster unglücklich, ja sogar
zuweilen kränklich, wenn mal bei einer Arbeit nicht alles mit rechten Dingen
zugeht.. So kommt es manchmal vor, dass ich eine abgelieferte Übersetzung, mit
der der Kunde völlig zufrieden war, wieder zurückbitte, um darin eine
notwendige Korrektur vorzunehmen.

Nein nein, es geht mir nicht um Perfektion! “Nobody is
perfect”. Das Schönste ist sogar mit einem “Schönheitsfehler” behaftet..
Ich kann nur nicht gegenüber Menschen, die mir etwas anvertraut haben,
unehrlich und ungerecht sein, und sie wissentlich in Schwierigkeiten bringen.

Aus Erfahrung weiss ich, dass “gut Ding Weile haben will”,
und man mit Überstürzung nur wieder das Gegenteil dessen erreichen kann, was
man ursprünglich erreichen wollte.

Daher finde ich den Spruch von Günter Grass sehr
rechtens, der mal gesagt hat „Übersetzen besteht
darin, alles so zu verändern, dass es gleich bleibt“, und meine,
dass man qualitätsbewussten Menschen nichts vormachen kann, weil sie von sehr
Weitem erkennen, was echt, was Imitation, was Berufsprodukt, was
Berufungsprodukt ist.

Das wirklich
Echte kann nämlich weder erlernt noch vorgespielt werden.. Entweder
ist etwas echt, oder aber unecht (ein Dazwischen gibt es nicht)!.
Deswegen kann echte Qualität auch wieder ausschließlich von ihresgleichen, d.h.
von qualitativen Menschen, echten Kennern, erkannt und gewürdigt werden; so,
wie der Spruch “Pros work with Pros” in etwa ausdrückt.. So überlassen
jene nichts dem Zufall, auch wenn es Ihnen
vielleicht mehr Zeit und Geld kostet.

Es ist fast niemand da, der nicht Qualität und Vertrauen möchte
und weiss, dass man mit Quantität alleine auf Dauer nicht so weit kommt..
Jedoch wissen nur wenige, dass es unmöglich ist, dass ein/e
Qualitätsschaffende/r irgendetwas Qualitatives zustandebringen würde und
überhaupt wollte, wenn ihr/ihm das zunächst einmal niemand trauen/anvertrauen
würde.. Dies, weil eben Qualitatives, wie gesagt, niemals auf dem Boden des
Drucks, des Zwangs und der Hast und Eile entstehen kann.. Das Gegenteil wäre
gegen das Naturgesetz.. So verbleibt am Ende die Tatsache, dass zuvor das Trauen/Anvertrauen/Vertrauen als notwendiger Boden
dienen muss, damit erst darauf Qualität entstehen kann.

Dazu höre ich manchmal
einige sagen, dies sei in der

schnellen Zeit zu riskant.. Ich
kann da nur erwidern: Nur Echtheit und Qualität überleben die Zeit.
